The use of Makaton
This piece of in-school research was conducted by Catrin Huaatiw¬†in 2014. Her research focussed on looking at: how often Makaton was used¬†in lessons – the quality and variety of signs used – adult knowledge and¬†confidence using Makaton to support communication.¬†Catrin‚Äôs results were achieved through an audit and a staff questionnaire.
Teachers across key subject areas teaching a KS4 class were evaluated on¬†their use and implementation of the Makaton program, in a 50 minute lesson.¬†The key subject areas were English, Maths, Science, PSHE, Expressive Arts,¬†P.E., Humanities and Enterprise. Each subject area was observed once.
All staff in the school were emailed a short survey to find out the percentage¬†who have received training. It also explored their knowledge and confidence¬†in using Makaton.
