Teacher Recruitment for 2016 our most successful year ever … in all phases and all subjects!
Bidding for Places
NCTL have just announced the process for schools to request School Direct teacher training places for 2017-18. Please can you use the Request for Places form to request places by Monday 11th July. We need to submit our applications to NCTL by midday on 15th July. Recruitment of trainee teachers for 2017-18 begins in October 2016.
Our Partner Universities for 2017-18
We have established partnerships with the UCL Institute of Education and Middlesex University.  Both university partners offer outstanding provision to our schools and our trainee teachers. Each University offers the nominated subject mentor full training prior to getting a trainee teacher. Every student will take part in the professional studies programme at the university as well as the school-based training and professional development opportunities. A university subject mentor is assigned to help the school and monitor the progress of the trainee teacher. This is allows the school (and mentor) to receive external assurance of their School Direct programme. We offer both primary and secondary training places.
School Phase and Subjects for 2017-18

 Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Course
For candidates with a first degree not in one of the above but wishes to train as a teacher in a priority subject there are subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) available. These are fully funded and last from between 8 weeks (called a refresher or booster course) to a more comprehensive 36-week course. The SKE runs either before commencing training or alongside.
Types of Training Places
School Direct has two routes into teaching:
Tuition Route (unsalaried)
Candidates are recruited to subjects and pay tuition fees to the university. They can either be self-funding or apply for a training bursary for the duration of their training. Trainee teachers are with the school for the year and will receive the same course as those trainees on the salaried route (below).
If candidates are a graduate and have been working for around three years in any career, School Direct (salaried) courses are available. This school-led option, candidates are selected directly by the school and partnership.¬†Trainees earn a salary during the training ‚Äď this will be on the unqualified scale ‚Äď this can be partly subsidised by funding from NCTL if the subject is a priority. The tuition fees are paid by the NCTL.¬†The level of funding is dependent on the subject with priority subjects such as mathematics, physics and computing attracting up to ¬£30,000 in London (subject to change for 2017-18).¬†It is envisaged that as the school is also investing in the trainee teacher, that the place will lead to a teaching post.
Both School Direct routes lead to Qualified Teacher Status. UCL (IOE) offer trainees to convert to a PGCE whilst Middlesex University award a PGCert (this includes 60 points towards a Masters Level qualification).
